Basic Definition
Communication: is a process of sending and receiving information.
Mass media comprising the press – newspapers and magazines and television, radio and internet. Papers get information from press agencies and big papers can afford to pay their own correspondent.
Newspapers and Magazines
Newspapers can be dailies or weeklies. They inform their readers about the latest news in politics, culture, economic and sport. Big newspapers also contain supplements. Huge supplements appear once in a week. Small supplements appear every day and they focus on one topic, for example, gardening or fishing.
There are two types of newspapers. The first ones are broadsheets. Some British broadsheets are for example The Times or The Guardian, some Czech broadsheets are for example Mladá fronta. They are larger in size with a few black and white pictures and they are considered to be serious and reliable. The other ones are tabloids. They are smaller in size they contain shorter text with many colourful pictures and the text isn‘t serious and rather unreliable. Some British tabloids are for example The Sun and The People.
Magazines can be published weekly, fortnightly, monthly or quarterly. The main difference from the newspaper is that they cannot provide fresh daily news. There are journals which specialize in one particular field. There are journals for doctors, economist, scientists and so on… Then there are hobby magazines for example for motorists, fishermen, there are magazines with crosswords puzzles, needlework, etc."
