The title of the poem is Eliot’s first hint that this is not a traditional love poem at all. “J. Alfred Prufrock “ is a ridiculous name, and Eliot wanted the subliminal connotation of a “prude” in a “frock”. It sounds ironically, because Prufrock would like to speak of love to woman but he doesn’t dare. This represent the ironic contrast between the romantic–suggested “love song” and possible explanation of Prufrock´s name.
Even though J. Alfred Prufrock follows the early form of T.S. Eliot’s signature to consider that Eliot is using Prufrock as an alter ego to explore his own emotions is meaningless. There are many points why not. For example – Eliot was a young man in 1909, while Prufrock is balding and middle-aged. Eliot disdained poetry that focused on the poet himself
This poem starts with epigraph. These lines are taken from Dante’s “Inferno” and are spoken by character of Count Guido da Montefelltro. Dante meets the punished Guido in the Eighth chasm of Hell. Guido explains that he is speaking freely to Dante only because he believes Dante is one of the dead who could never return to earth to export that he says. This concept mirrors Prufrock´s intent because he only wants to share the meaning of his poem with other poets. Only poets, such as himself, are able to understand the pain and suffering that he goes through in writing a poem. “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” represents the testimony of a failed artist because Prufrock fails to complete the themes of his poem. Prufrock, however, is on earth, in a lonely, alienating city. The images of the city are sterile and deathly; the night sky looks “like a patient etherised upon a table” while down below barren “half-desert streets” reveal “one-night cheap hotels/ and sawdust restaurants."
